Now you’re firing up Canva, playing with logos, Googling colour palettes, and asking your friends which font feels more “professional.”</p><p class="" data-start="604" data-end="728">But here’s the thing: branding isn’t the first step. It’s not even the second.<br data-start="682" data-end="685" />It only <em data-start="693" data-end="700">works</em> when it’s built on clarity.</p><p class="" data-start="730" data-end="908">If your message isn’t clear, your visuals won’t save you. So before you invest time, money, or emotional energy into design, here’s a simple checklist to get your ducks in a row.</p><p class="" data-start="910" data-end="1011">I break it down into 7 key areas I cover in my <a href="https://www.brandeez.co.za/free-guide/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=internal&amp;utm_campaign=startup-guide"><strong data-start="957" data-end="980">startup brand guide</strong></a>, but here’s the short version:</p><hr class="" data-start="1013" data-end="1016" /><h3 class="" data-start="1018" data-end="1050">1. <strong data-start="1025" data-end="1048">Business Essentials</strong></h3><p class="" data-start="1051" data-end="1085"><span style="color: #ffa903;"><strong data-start="1051" data-end="1083">Before you brand, get legit.</strong></span></p><ul data-start="1086" data-end="1302"><li class="" data-start="1086" data-end="1152"><p class="" data-start="1088" data-end="1152">Have you registered your business or decided how you’re trading?</p></li><li class="" data-start="1153" data-end="1239"><p class="" data-start="1155" data-end="1239">Do you have a business name that’s actually available (domain, social handles, etc)?</p></li><li class="" data-start="1240" data-end="1302"><p class="" data-start="1242" data-end="1302">Do you understand what you&#8217;re <em data-start="1272" data-end="1282">offering</em> and who it&#8217;s <em data-start="1296" data-end="1301">for</em>?</p></li></ul><p class="" data-start="1304" data-end="1411"><strong data-start="1304" data-end="1314">Don’t:</strong> Build a brand around a vague idea.<br data-start="1349" data-end="1352" /><strong data-start="1352" data-end="1359">Do:</strong> Get specific about what you do, and why it matters.</p><hr class="" data-start="1413" data-end="1416" /><h3 class="" data-start="1418" data-end="1446">2. <strong data-start="1425" data-end="1444">Branding Assets</strong></h3><p class="" data-start="1447" data-end="1487"><span style="color: #ffa903;"><strong data-start="1447" data-end="1485">Now we talk visuals. But only now.</strong></span></p><ul data-start="1488" data-end="1670"><li class="" data-start="1488" data-end="1555"><p class="" data-start="1490" data-end="1555">Do you have a logo, fonts, and colours that reflect your message?</p></li><li class="" data-start="1556" data-end="1608"><p class="" data-start="1558" data-end="1608">Are you using consistent styles across everything?</p></li><li class="" data-start="1609" data-end="1670"><p class="" data-start="1611" data-end="1670">Do your visuals actually match the <em data-start="1646" data-end="1652">tone</em> of your business?</p></li></ul><p class="" data-start="1672" data-end="1802"><strong data-start="1672" data-end="1682">Don’t:</strong> Settle for something that “just looks nice.”<br data-start="1727" data-end="1730" /><strong data-start="1730" data-end="1737">Do:</strong> Build a brand that <em data-start="1757" data-end="1773">feels like you</em> and speaks to your audience.</p><hr class="" data-start="1804" data-end="1807" /><h3 class="" data-start="1809" data-end="1841">3. <strong data-start="1816" data-end="1839">Business Stationery</strong></h3><p class="" data-start="1842" data-end="1888"><span style="color: #ffa903;"><strong data-start="1842" data-end="1886">If you’re handing it out, make it count.</strong></span></p><ul data-start="1889" data-end="2000"><li class="" data-start="1889" data-end="1953"><p class="" data-start="1891" data-end="1953">Business cards, email signatures, invoices — are they branded?</p></li><li class="" data-start="1954" data-end="2000"><p class="" data-start="1956" data-end="2000">Is your contact info clear and professional?</p></li></ul><p class="" data-start="2002" data-end="2111"><strong data-start="2002" data-end="2012">Don’t:</strong> Use default templates or personal Gmail addresses.<br data-start="2063" data-end="2066" /><strong data-start="2066" data-end="2073">Do:</strong> Look like someone worth working with.</p><hr class="" data-start="2113" data-end="2116" /><h3 class="" data-start="2118" data-end="2146">4. <strong data-start="2125" data-end="2144">Online Presence</strong></h3><p class="" data-start="2147" data-end="2186"><span style="color: #ffa903;"><strong data-start="2147" data-end="2184">People will Google you. Be ready.</strong></span></p><ul data-start="2187" data-end="2368"><li class="" data-start="2187" data-end="2249"><p class="" data-start="2189" data-end="2249">Do you have a simple, clear website — even just a one-pager?</p></li><li class="" data-start="2250" data-end="2302"><p class="" data-start="2252" data-end="2302">Are your social media profiles set up and branded?</p></li><li class="" data-start="2303" data-end="2368"><p class="" data-start="2305" data-end="2368">Are your links working, and does everything say the same thing?</p></li></ul><p class="" data-start="2370" data-end="2507"><strong data-start="2370" data-end="2380">Don’t:</strong> Confuse people with mixed messages across platforms.<br data-start="2433" data-end="2436" /><strong data-start="2436" data-end="2443">Do:</strong> Make it easy for people to find you and understand what you do.</p><hr class="" data-start="2509" data-end="2512" /><h3 class="" data-start="2514" data-end="2543">5. <strong data-start="2521" data-end="2541">Marketing Basics</strong></h3><p class="" data-start="2544" data-end="2582"><span style="color: #ffa903;"><strong data-start="2544" data-end="2580">Don’t overthink it — just start.</strong></span></p><ul data-start="2583" data-end="2726"><li class="" data-start="2583" data-end="2624"><p class="" data-start="2585" data-end="2624">Are you clear on who you’re talking to?</p></li><li class="" data-start="2625" data-end="2667"><p class="" data-start="2627" data-end="2667">Do you know what problem you’re solving?</p></li><li class="" data-start="2668" data-end="2726"><p class="" data-start="2670" data-end="2726">Are you posting valuable, relevant content consistently?</p></li></ul><p class="" data-start="2728" data-end="2848"><strong data-start="2728" data-end="2738">Don’t:</strong> Try to be everywhere at once.<br data-start="2768" data-end="2771" /><strong data-start="2771" data-end="2778">Do:</strong> Show up where your ideal client hangs out — and speak their language.</p><hr class="" data-start="2850" data-end="2853" /><h3 class="" data-start="2855" data-end="2883">6. <strong data-start="2862" data-end="2881">Tools &amp; Systems</strong></h3><p class="" data-start="2884" data-end="2916"><span style="color: #ffa903;"><strong data-start="2884" data-end="2914">Automation is your friend.</strong></span></p><ul data-start="2917" data-end="3035"><li class="" data-start="2917" data-end="2990"><p class="" data-start="2919" data-end="2990">Are you using tools to streamline your emails, invoices, bookings, etc?</p></li><li class="" data-start="2991" data-end="3035"><p class="" data-start="2993" data-end="3035">Do you have templates to make life easier?</p></li></ul><p class="" data-start="3037" data-end="3145"><strong data-start="3037" data-end="3047">Don’t:</strong> Waste hours reinventing the wheel each time.<br data-start="3092" data-end="3095" /><strong data-start="3095" data-end="3102">Do:</strong> Set up systems once, then tweak as needed.</p><hr class="" data-start="3147" data-end="3150" /><h3 class="" data-start="3152" data-end="3189">7. <strong data-start="3159" data-end="3187">Support &amp; Accountability</strong></h3><p class="" data-start="3190" data-end="3238"><span style="color: #ffa903;"><strong data-start="3190" data-end="3236">You don’t have to figure it all out alone.</strong></span></p><ul data-start="3239" data-end="3327"><li class="" data-start="3239" data-end="3281"><p class="" data-start="3241" data-end="3281">Do you have someone to bounce ideas off?</p></li><li class="" data-start="3282" data-end="3327"><p class="" data-start="3284" data-end="3327">Are you getting feedback, not just “likes”?</p></li></ul><p class="" data-start="3329" data-end="3432"><strong data-start="3329" data-end="3339">Don’t:</strong> Build in a vacuum.<br data-start="3358" data-end="3361" /><strong data-start="3361" data-end="3368">Do:</strong> Surround yourself with people who get what you’re trying to do.</p><hr class="" data-start="3434" data-end="3437" /><h4 data-start="3439" data-end="3521"><strong data-start="3439" data-end="3459">The Bottom Line?</strong></h4><p class="" data-start="3439" data-end="3521">Start with clarity, <em data-start="3482" data-end="3488">then</em> brand.
